BELGRADE - the perfect blend of CULTURE and TRADITION

Belgrade is the capital of Serbia, and has a population of around 1.6 million. It is situated in South-Eastern Europe, on the Balkan Peninsula, at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers.

It is one of the oldest cities in Europe and has since ancient times been an important focal point for traffic, an intersection of the roads of Eastern and Western Europe.

CULTURE OF SERBIA – BELGRADE

Culture has always been a crucial part of the Serbian identity, so much that in certain difficult historical periods, it only existed and survived through culture. Belgrade is the center of culture and art of Serbia. It is Belgrade where our most notable artists create, where over 11.000 theatrical performances, exhibitions, concerts, performance events, and other artistic programs are presented and where prominent authors in the world of art are hosted.

TRADITIONAL FOLK DANCES OF SERBIA

Serbian dance is an old tradition and a strong element in the Serbian culture. The traditional dances are of social function, bringing the community and families together at various important days such as weddings, Christmas or Easter.

Serbian folk dance is kolo, performed differently from region to region, while the famous folk instruments are before mentioned “gusle” and “frula” (an instrument resembling a small recorder or a flute), and a small tamboura in Vojvodina. A trumpet is also very popular in Serbia. Kolo (Serbian Cyrillic: Коло) is the traditional collective folk dance, where a group of people (usually several dozen, at the very least three) holding each other by the hands or around the waist, dance, ideally in a circle, hence the name. Each region has at least one unique kolo.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS OF BELGRADE

It is Belgrade where the most significant works of architecture are located, with Kalemegdan accommodating Belgrade Fortress, cultural monuments and other immovable cultural treasures, numerous archeological sites with remnants of developed civilization and culture on Belgrade territory from prehistory until this day.

Victor – Pobednik

Meštrović initially designed a sculpture to be set up as part of the drinking fountain on Terazije in 1912, but the public was against having a nude male figure set up in the city centre. After World War I the project was cancelled and thus the Victor was set up on Kalemegdan in 1928 and came to represent a symbol of Belgrade.

Republic Square

The existing square was formed after the demolition of Stambol Gate and the construction of the National Theatre building in 1869.

NIGHTLIFE IN BELGRADE

The capital of Serbia, Belgrade, is known as “the city that never sleeps”. Floating clubs on its rivers have become synonyms for great parties and never ending fun, and Skadarlija, the bohemian street, for a place where music and singing can be heard until dawn.

Belgrade is most famous for its vibrant nightlife and the vast variety of options it offers for having fun, especially to young people. Here you can find your own place of joy no matter what kind of music you prefer, how much money you have or what kind of food you like to eat. There is something for everybody: from modern restaurants, “splavs” (floating river clubs), alternative music clubs and theaters to famous “kafanas” (traditional Serbian taverns) of Skadarlija. Definitely, in Belgrade you can find a different option for each day of the week, so get ready to boost your social life!
